This 5 m high figure, which is reminiscent of the Scottish monster “Nessie”, was designed by one of the participating pupils as part of a competition at the Laborschule Bielefeld. The shrill sea serpent stands for individuality, surprise and creativity and has won over the vast majority of pupils and teachers at the Laborschule Bielefeld.<\/p>\n\n

The design sketch served as a template for the realization of this project. First, our CAD specialists created a 3D CAM drawing from the two-dimensional drawing. Using the 3D model, we first milled the giant snake figure out of polystyrene. Divided into several segments, this polystyrene model was molded with fiberglass using the hand lay-up technique<\/a>. The individual elements were then connected to form a large, hollow GRP figure and additionally stiffened from the inside. After the plastic surface had been filled, sanded and primed, the artwork was given a bright coat of paint.<\/p>\n\n

The figure, which weighs around 500 kg, was secured with a wooden frame for transportation. On site, it was placed in the middle of the traffic island using a crane and firmly mounted on a prepared concrete foundation by our team.<\/p>\n\n

Since then, the sea serpent in the traffic circle has attracted the attention of drivers and passers-by as a unique and striking eye-catcher and has caused a moment of surprise for some.<\/p>\n\n
