GRP needle with stainless steel look for the Biggeblick
A 9-meter-long needle sculpture made of GRP forms the center of the new “Biggeblick” skywalk on Lake Bigge in the Hanseatic town of Attendorn. As part of the tourist development of Lake Bigge in the Sauerland region, a viewing platform was built 90 meters above the lake on a steep face. A footbridge leads over the steep face and ends with a round platform in the middle of which is a round recess with a 9-meter-high needle sculpture. At night, the needle is illuminated by LED spotlights, creating a landmark that can be seen from afar across the Biggesee. The organically shaped needle could not be produced economically from stainless steel, so ACCENTFORM was commissioned to manufacture this sculpture from GRP.
ACCENTFORM produced a production mold in May 2013 and then laminated the needle as an undivided component. One particular challenge was the customer’s request for a stainless steel surface coating. A stainless steel powder embedded in resin was applied to the component using the product GUM-SMOKE from VEROMETAL. Finally, the surface is ground and polished until the desired stainless steel look is achieved. An internal lightning conductor ensures that the GRP needle will last for a long time.
