Artwork Wind Finger

ACCENTFORM was commissioned by the artist group “Schaum” to create an artistic piece called “Wind finger”, to be used as a landmark for a small residence in Norrliden in Kalmar.

The artwork is a four-meter high (13 feet) hand replica with the index finger raised to the sky. On the tip of the index finger, a windmill was installed.  When this windmill turns it produces an LED light symbolizing wind power.

First, the hand was scanned and converted, using reverse engineering, to a CAD file.

Then, the sculpture was shaped from five large-sized Styrofoam blocks by means of our CNC machining center and glued together into one piece.  After a fine sanding this hand became real art.

Next, the “Wind finger” was coated with Fiberglass laminate, then, primed and sanded.  Subsequently, we finished the sculpture with an anti-graffiti protective coating in RAL 9003.

ACCENTFORM has executed this project starting with the manufacturing, and culminated with the  installation in Sweden.

For the professional collaboration, we would like to thank the artist group “Schaum” (Alexandra Lotz, Tim Kellner and Marc Wiesel).

GIANT FOOT AND GIANT HAND

Giant foot in the festival hall of a renowned hotel

There is no challenge we do not face. In order to stage the auditorium of a renowned hotel in an unusual way, ACCENTFORM was commissioned to produce an oversized model foot made of Styrofoam.

To do this, the customer’s foot had to be scanned in advance and assembled into a CAD file using reverse engineering, which could then be processed further. Subsequently, the desired model was subdivided into individual segments, each of which could be realized with a CNC
machining center. The surface was coated with white paint. After joining all parts to the desired polystyrene model base, the object was reworked by our
professional team with regard to individual customer requirements and adapted accordingly.

Huge hand model

Similarly, a 2.50 m tall and 80 kg hand model was made.

Asteroid VESTA

The asteroid Vesta about 516 km (almost 321 miles) in diameter is the second largest asteroid that has ever been discovered. It orbits the Sun in 3.63 years and at a speed of 69,624 km / h (19.34 km / s, over 43,000 MPH). A research probe had already digitized the asteroid and ACCENTform used this to create a replica at the 1:300,000 scale. The model weighs about 200 kg (440 lbs) and is about 1.70 m (5.6 ft) in diameter..

The surface of the asteroid Vesta consists of iron, magnesium and pyroxene rock. However, our model consists of an inner polystyrene core and a rigid outer shell coated with a modelling paste. It was pre-milled in a Styrofoam block by our five-axis machining center; then, it was coated and shaped again. To achieve an authentic surface, the model was painted and coated with sand.

Tessellated Skull

Extravagant Skull for Disco Club in Geneva

Someone, who wants to add a special touch to his club, needs to come up with something highly unusual: case in point, the disco JAVA CLUB. In collaboration with the Berlin-based artist Nicole Zäch, ACCENTform created for her commissioned work an art object with its enormously big effect – a tessellated skull!

In the planning stages of the work, a skull was scanned and converted to a CAD file. Then, the skull was milled in various Styrofoam segments by our CNC machining center and glued together to form one piece. After being professional polished, the artwork was then easily recognizable.

After being laminated with the fibreglass, primed and sanded; the skull finally showed his true face: through the use of many small mirror mosaics, which were pasted on the whole skull´s area, this sculpture really stands out!  Special lamps integrated directly into the eyes of the skull will make not only the skull, but also the complete JAVA CLUB disco shine!

Fibreglass Angel

For international show-jumping competitions, we have produced a horse jumping obstacle, which represent the famous Canadian statue from the Princes´ Gates. This fibreglass Angel was milled in Polyester foam and subsequently sealed. The statue was coated with glass fiber reinforced plastic and finished with white paint.

Work Process:

The angel figure is a replica of the angel from the Exhibition Place’s Prince’s Gates in Toronto. The task was to make a replica of this Angel as a small, weather-resistant, and light angel figure to be mounted on the horse jumping obstacle.

The image research was begun using Google.

  • The freehand drawing, which was scaled to the size of 1.4 m (4.6 feet)
  • Shaping and carving the figure in Polyester foam (Styrofoam)
  • Coated with Fiberglass – this was especially complicated, because many small edges and beads must also be carefully laminated
  • Especially lightweight sculpture

Statue Princes Gates:

The Princes´ Gates, also known as the Princes’ Islands Gates, stand in Toronto (Canada), and it is part of the main entrance to the Canadian National Exhibition. The Prince of Wales and his brother Prince George inaugurated the monument in 1927. The statue is the “Goddess of Winged Victory”, a famous Greek statue, an interpretation of the original Nike of Samothrace.

Equestrian obstacles

Side Panels for Horse Jumping Obstacles

While rider and steed can let off steam without limits at the equestrian obstacles, the customer’simagination knows no bounds when it comes to the variety of shapes of these objects: Decorative elements that blend smoothly into a course also have a long tradition as advertising media. The more playfully and skilfully they fit into the equestrian event and offer nuanced variety, the more they will be appreciated by the public.

At the same time, of course, they must meet the needs and safety of both horse and human. ACCENTFORM is very familiar with these needs and manufactures even unusual objects to customer specifications with the utmost precision.

  • Sketched dolphin on Styrofoam block
  • Dolphin mold, carved/shaped
  • Model details and subtleties, then smoothed
  • Laminate
  • Remove hardened laminate from the positive mold
  • Slice alongside the laminate structure, and separate from the form without any damage
  • Glued parts together and laminate again
  • Using the hand lay-up method and fibreglass and polyester resin, the walls of the assembled dolphin were about 5mm (1/5 inch) thick
  • Primed and painted using airbrush
  • Sealed form
  • Exhibit

Sculpture “Needle”

A 9-meter (29 feet) long fibreglass sculpture, in the shape of needle, forms the center of the new Skywalk “Bigge view” at the Biggesee in the Hansa town Attendorn. At the entrance to the Sauerland Biggesee the tourists have a viewing platform, which was built on a platform, 90 meters high (almost 300 feet) above the lake. A footbridge leads over the platform and ends with a rounded platform.  In the middle of the center is a 9-meter (29 ½ feet) high sculpture in the shape of a needle. At night, the needle is illuminated by LED lamps, thus it forms to landmark on the Biggesee. The accurately shaped needle could not be produced in a cost effective manner from stainless steel.  So, ACCENTform was commissioned to create this sculpture of fibreglass.

In May 2013, ACCENTform manufactured a production mold, and then, laminated the “needle” to a one-piece object. A main challenge was the customer’s request to make a stainless steel surface coating. Using the product GUNSMOKE from VeroMetal, the stainless steel powder embedded in resin was applied on the needle. Then, the surface was smoothed and polished to make the stainless steel finish particularly shining.  To protect the item from any weather damage, it was equipped inside with the lightning rod.

Advantages of Fibreglass
