Stone imitations

nelson-saule-gfkOn request we develop and realize stone imitations and rock imitations made of GRP, which hardly differ optically from real stones. Whether an asteroid, a huge rock, an erratic boulder, a stone column or a sculpture that appears to be chiseled out of a rock to be. These stone replicas can be realized in almost any size and in a wide variety of shapes.

Artificial rocks and stone imitations made of GRP are dimensionally stable, resilient and frostproof. In contrast to natural stone, they are characterized by a low dead weight. These positive properties make them suitable for any indoor or outdoor application: as complex riding obstacles, decorative or climbing elements in amusement parks or as eye-catchers at various events.

The basic shape of the stone models is first cut by hand from a polystyrene block, e.g. with a chain saw. It is then encased in fiberglass using the hand-laminating process. The authentic surface is realized with a colored basic coloring in connection with stone application.

Custom-made balls for advertising

By order of Departmentdeluxe we made three balls for the famous TV channel SAT1. These decorative balls in a size from 40 to 150 cm imitate the rainbow colored SAT1 logo. They consist of an inner white ball and seven colored slats above it. The special challenge for us was to place the colored slats on the white ball at an even distance from each other so that they “float” about 5 mm above the ball. They are only connected to the sphere at the two poles. We precisely mastered this tricky task over the course of three weeks. The beautiful 3D logo now interacts with well-known actors such as Dr. Carola Holzner, Jörg Pilawa or Ralf Schmitz in various commercials of the station.

Domes, cupolas, radoms

Large-sized spheres are used as projection domes for simulators, domes or radoms.

In a projection dome, video recordings, animations or images are projected onto the inside of the spherical surface (dome, spherical section, curved screen). Planetariums are a well-known example.
For this purpose, the surface must be smooth and white in color. A radome (radar dome) is a closed enclosure for measurements or data transmissions. This protects the antennas and sensitive measuring devices from external weather influences. The materials GFRP and CFRP are excellently suited for the production of
such objects.

In principle, the aim is to produce large-format segments so that as few joints and seams as possible are visible. At the same time, large-format segmentation reduces assembly time. The width dimension is limited by the usual transport width (truck width 2.5 m). This results in usual surface sizes of approx. 10 m².

Before a segment can be made from GFRP or CFRP, a production mold must be created. Due to the three-dimensional geometry, it makes most sense for this large production mold to be given a stable substructure (wood-frame construction). Large-sized blocks of STYROPOR are then glued onto this substructure. It is a very economical material and can be milled very well. Nevertheless, STYROPOR has a very poor surface finish after
machining and is not compression resistant. Therefore, the polystyrene structure is milled off with an undersize of 12 mm. Then a special epoxy paste is applied to the premilled surface. This paste hardens within 24 hours and is then milled to the target dimension. The resulting surface is hard and can be brought to a finished state by sanding and painting. This makes it suitable as a production mold.

Sandwich structure

The individual segments for a dome can then be molded from this large-format production mold. First, a gelcoat with a layer thickness of approx. 0.7 mm is applied to the production mold. Then the glass fiber reinforced plastic is laminated on. The layer thicknesses vary between 4 – 8 mm, depending on the application. If higher demands are placed on the object (dynamic dome), a sandwich structure is executed. The individual segments of a dome are attached to the flange at the site by means of a screw connection or glued.

Movement Sculptures

Please touch!

This is the name of the participatory art action initiated by the Paderborn artist Manfred Webel. He sees a sculpture first and foremost as a social object that interacts with the viewer not just by looking at it but by touching it. Unlike a visit to a museum, his rolling works of art may and should be touched and moved. Thus, Manfred Webel makes art not only visible, but tangible for ALL on his tour through all of North Rhine-Westphalia.

We at ACCENTFORM were allowed to contribute to this wonderful action by producing a total of nine objects by Manfred Webel in different sizes. The movement sculptures with their own names “Quattroporte, Monami, Bubble and Chair” were first CNC milled from Styrofoam and then coated with fiberglass reinforced plastic using a laminating process. Some of the sculptureser Some of the sculptures received a monochrome red paint finish, while others were further finished by the artist himself.

The constructive cooperation with the sympathetic artist was a great pleasure for us!

“I really enjoy working with Accentform, not only because they have a deep technical understanding and work in a very solution-oriented way, but also because they have a heart for new issues and innovations to be developed for them. I also like the old school of concluding contracts with a handshake and the absolute binding nature of verbally exchanged agreements”.
Manfred Webel

Riesige Goldene Enzensberger Sterne

Huge stars

It would be hard for customers to imagine a department store during Advent without Christmas decorations, glitter and shine.

For the Christmas atmosphere in the Ernst-August-Galerie in Hanover, we were allowed to make our contribution. According to a design sketch of First Christmas by ROSENAU we made three huge Enzensberger stars.

For this project we designed and built a mold with a diameter of two meters. Subsequently, the stars were implemented in the hand laminate process from FRP and painted with a metallic color in gold. The company Firma Homeier-Lichttechnik in Nienstädt was responsible for the illumination with more than 160 light points.

A special challenge for us was to lay the optical fibers through a small flap in the body of the star so that they could be bundled in front of the light source. Just in time for Advent, the three golden Enzensberger stars shone in their sparkling glory and contributed to the pre-Christmas joy of the customers.

GIANT HANDS FOR IAA-Fair

At the internationally important IAA automotive trade fair in Frankfurt 2019, AUDI has presented its new convertible model in a particularly eye-catching way: the Audi A5 40 TDI quattro is staged by two white giant hands. This staging makes the trade fair stand a special eye-catcher, to which we were allowed to make our contribution.

By order of the company Metron eging GmbH we made the two over 5m large hands out of FRP.
First, the oversized hands were milled from Styrofoam on a five-axis CNC machining center using the CAD files supplied. To obtain a hard surface, the Styrofoam models were coated with a 3 mm thick layer of FRP using the hand laminate process. To keep the oversized hands as light as possible, the entire Styrofoam was then removed from the inside.

To create a smooth and even surface, the entire area had to be filled, sanded, filled, sanded and primed. This was followed by a white matte paint finish. Good cooperation with the customer ensured trouble-free assembly to the customer’s framework.

Laughing gum

Our customer commissioned us to produce two popular advertising figures from GRP in XXL format for a new opening of his candy world in Oberhausen.

The figure “Dickie” of the Super Dickmann’s Foam Kisses in a height of approx. 1m with changing headgear should sweeten the entrance to the store. The children as well as adults should get big eyes at the 2.5m high laughing gum standing in the back. His big googly eyes move in a certain rhythm. However, until the eyes got big and the desire for sweets a few things had to be done.

The Dickie as well as the laughing rubber were carved out of Styrofoam. For a firmer and paintable surface, the styrofoam was covered with GRP. Dickie was thus ready for the “chocolate coating”. The special feature are the original Chucks in shoe size 56, but the white shoes still had to be colored in orange.

The laughing gum had to be stripped of the styrofoam after the coating to make room for the technology. After this and the finishing touches were completed, life could also be breathed into the laughing gum with the bright colors using the airbrush process. The separately laminated/painted eyes were then inserted on the axles in the eye sockets and wired to the technology inside and programmed with a Siemens logo at the desired rate.

Beach party with Malibu

ADVERTISING FIGURE MADE OF GFK – FLAMINGO, PINEAPPLE, COCONUT

Malibu is the world’s best-selling rum-based liqueur with natural taste of coconut. This popular drink is an ingredient of many cocktails. In combination with orange, passion fruit or pineapple juice, it creates many wonderful drinks with a dash of the Caribbean.

ACCENTFORM made giant pineapple and coconut fruit and funky flamingo Mali. These aesthetic objects are a real eye-catcher at any beach party and help create a casual and fun atmosphere.

The 2.5 m high flamingo was carved freehand from STYROPOR based on a photo template and then the surface was coated with a 2 mm thick GRP layer.

The outfit of the hip bird is completed by the blue glasses and colorful bathing slippers. The giant fruits – coconut and pineapple were modeled in CAD and then CNC-milled from Styrofoam.

The coconut was given a surface with a natural fiber look, while the pineapple enjoyed a fruity airbrush finish.

JCVD - Skulptur XXL

Oversized sculpture of JCVD

At the end of 2017, the new streaming series “Jean-Claude Van Johnson” started exclusively on AMAZON. For the worldwide film premiere on 12.12.2017 in Paris, we were commissioned by the event agency GRAL to create an oversized sculpture. The statue is to represent the famous action hero Jean Claude van Damme, who plays himself in the JCVJ series.

Part of the order was two columns including pedestal under the feet of the monumental figure. The columns were made of styrofoam and the pedestals were made of wooden panels and finished with marble look.

We first roughly milled the 2.7 m wide figure from Styrofoam. All details, such as facial features and muscle parts were modeled manually by the artist Waldemar Neumann according to photo templates. The Styrofoam surface was then given texture and gold patina. Our sculpture literally went down well in Paris, cut a fine figure next to the action hero at the premiere and even made it into the “Bild” newspaper.

Styrofoam sports car

By order of the company Neulant van Exel we were allowed to produce a fancy sports car model in original size.

Based on the supplied 3D data, a 1 : 1 replica was milled with high precision from a large-sized polystyrene block. The 4.8 m long model was produced on a 5-axis portal milling machine (10 x 4.5 m) in one clamping.
The car tires were milled separately and later movably attached to the model. The open-pored Styrofoam surface was closed with a mineral putty by manual processing and painted black/red. Further adjustments, as well as the mounting of the lamps were done by the customer.

The luxury sleigh was first used as a stage backdrop for the performance of a well-known German rapper duo.
